Clarice Genevieve Woodward

Clarice Genevieve (Jenny) Pelley Meadows Woodward passed away in Bloomington on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013. Born March 5, 1943, on the family's dairy farm in northeastern Monroe County, she was the youngest of eight children born to Benjamin Z. and Opal Mae (Fulford) Pelley. A 1961 graduate of Unionville High School, she began her working career shortly afterward. She held clerical positions at Sarkes Tarzian, the IU School of Education, the Monroe County Public Library, McCrea & McCrea, and, her favorite position, Executive Assistant to R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr., editor-in-chief of The American Spectator. She also was employed as a realtor, as well as a freelance editor and proofreader. Reading, cooking and singing were among her favorite things to do. A long-time member of the New Unionville Baptist Church and later the Ellettsville First Baptist Church, she served as church clerk, interim treasurer, ABW President, ABW Association President, VBS Director, SS teacher, etc., and was a choir member. She also prepared numerous meals and food items, especially desserts and salads. Her children always knew to inquire whether the cake cooling on the counter "is for work or church or for us." On October 6, 1961, she married James (Jimmie) Dee Meadows, who passed away November 8, 1978. To the marriage were born J.D. Meadows (John Lin) of San Francisco, CA; Gina Meadows (Teresa Brown) of Nashville, IN; and Jamie Rose Meadows of Bloomington, who survive her. Also surviving is her second husband, Ray E. Woodward, whom she married November 2, 1985. Additional survivors include her stepchildren: Dan Woodward of Bedford, Vicki Woodward of Bloomington, Curt (Rae) Woodward of Hudson, MI, five step-grandchildren, She is survived by several sisters and a brother: Sisters- Easter Yeadon, Bloomington-Edna Manis, Bloomfield -Dollie Richardson, Spencer, Brother-Maurice Pelley, -Gosport. And numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also predeceased by her parents, a sister and brother in childhood (Esther and Melvin Pelley), and elder brother Les Pelley. Visitation will be Tuesday November 5th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Chandler Funeral Home, with the service scheduled for Wednesday Nov. 6 at 11 a.m., Rev. Mark Villanova presiding. Burial will follow at Shilo Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Shilo Cemetery Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
