Eupha Maybelle Barnett

Eupha Maybelle Payne Barnett passed away on Monday, April 11, 2016 at Stonecroft Health Campus, she was 102. Eupha was born on December 1, 1913 in Bloomington, the 5th child of W.V. Payne and Rosetta Boltinghouse Payne. Her siblings were Mildred Payne (who passed away in 1901 at the age of 4), Mary Payne McCool, William Voorhees Payne, Jr and Margaretta Payne. She graduated from Indiana University and married the love of her life, C. Worth Barnett in 1935. They moved to Indianapolis where Worth worked for L.S. Ayres. After raising their two children Shirley Margaret and Carolyn Ruth she became a 4th grade teacher at IPS #45. Her love of teaching seems to have been inherited as both sisters were school teachers and her father W.V was Superintendent of Schools for Monroe County for years. She taught for 20 years and then retired to their home on Lake Freeman in Monticello, IN. Eupha was a wonderful hostess for yearly Barnett family reunions at the lake. She became famous for her “Job Jar”. Each family member would draw a piece of paper out of the jar with a job written on it for a particular day. One of the most infamous jobs was to keep Eupha out of the kitchen during meal preparation. Of course that was an impossible job. She would keep grandchildren (2 at a time only) for a week each summer at the lake. Eupha was an elder in the Presbyterian Church in Monticello. She took her husband out of a nursing home to care for him at home. He was completely disabled by a series of very serious strokes. Her dedication to him was a lesson for all. Eupha loved to play Bridge and did so whenever she could. Eupha moved to Bloomington in 2006 to be with her daughter and son-in-law. She soon joined the Ellettsville Christian Church and attended Bible Studies until the Spring of 2014. She never passed up an opportunity to tell others what God was doing and had done in her life. She continued with her Bridge games until she was well over 100 years old. Her partners said that she was still very good at it even at that age. She was a great (hand sewing) quilter. She used a machine only to piece the top part but all the actual quilting was done by hand. Her last quilt was finished just a month before her 101st birthday. Eupha had a very close and large family. Her daughter Shirley has six boys and 18 grandchildren. Carolyn had four children and two grandchildren. Kurt Allen Buehler and Sonia Annette “Annie” Brinson Buehler with their children Kelsy Lee Webber (spouse Michael Douglas Webber and Eupha’s great-great-grandchild Caroline Lee Webber), Clarissa Erin “Clari”, Samuel Worth “Sam”, Jada Lee, and Joseph Kandel “Joe”. Paul Andrew Buehler and Linda Lou Teter Buehler with their children Bryan Andrew (Bryan’s fiancée Cortney Pace), Brianna Lynn. Greg Stephen Buehler and Suzanne Renee Arenholz Buehler with their children Ryan Michael and Arianna Elizabeth. John Ryan Buehler and Jennifer “Jen” Lynne Schuetz Buehler with their children Grace Ann, Olivia Lynne, Eleanora “Ella” Mae, Charlotte Ryan. Mark Anthony Buehler and Christine “Chrissy” Anne Bloomfield Buehler with their children Isabella “Bella” Rose, Benjamin “Ben” Andrew, and Sara Elizabeth. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Ellettsville Christian Church at 10:30 a.m. Chandler Funeral Home in Ellettsville is assisting with her arrangements.
