Gay Lee Martin

Gay L. (Boutwell) Martin of Bloomington passed away at her home in the early morning hours on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the age of 70. The daughter of Willis and Wanda (Claypool) Boutwell, she was born in Lima, Ohio on December 17, 1946. Gay was a Registered Nurse retiring from Bloomington Hospital after 23 years. She was a member of the South Union Christian Church in Bloomington. Gay had a love of music and shared it through singing with the church’s Praise Team. At a young age, Gay played the piano and shared her love of music with her family and friends. Gay was an excellent homemaker and her baking was a special memory for her family, especially her pies and Christmas cookies, when she involved her children and grandchildren. Gay liked to travel and camp, play mahjong with her girlfriends, quilt and cross-stitch. She was an avid IU Basketball fan and attended her children’s and grandchildren’s sports activities rooting them on and encouraging them every step of the way. Of all this, most importantly, Gay loved to share her faith. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandmother, Ethel Boutwell; the father of her children, James Burkholder; and her daughter, Jennifer Burkholder. Gay is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, Ken Martin; children, Bryan Burkholder (Candi) of Bloomington, Chad Burkholder (Kelli) of Bloomfield, N.M., Tiana Burkholder (Charles Keith) of Gosport and Kristen Lewis (T.J.) of Bloomington; grandchildren, Madeleine, Sierra, Kyle, Meghan, Jada, Emileigh, Van, Ellie, Cora, and Taylor; sisters, Elaine Sommers (Bruce) of Delphos, OH and Patricia Arthur (Cary) of Pandora, OH and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at South Union Christian Church 6510 S. Rockport Road, Bloomington on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jim Cain officiating. Burial is to follow at Methodist Cemetery in Ellettsville. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday evening from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and again one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
